Résumé
The acknowledgement of diversity calls for a fresh look at the requirements of teacher training and that of all educational stakeholders. Of these requirements, the first is openness to diversity and the development of critical thinking. In this presentation, I first discuss our reasons for having teacher training include a reflection on the principles of diversity in democratic education. What are these principles and what are their actual applications in teacher training? I then discuss a number of objections related to normative positions in education. How can the importance of normative training be justified, taking into account criticisms related to relativism, community diversity and issues arising from the evolution of secularity and the separation of church and state? This part of my presentation will attempt to clarify links between teacher training requirements and the main normative programs, such as ethics and religious culture, and history and citizenship education, without excluding all of the normative components of teacher training programs.
